The national Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) standards were created in 2000 to advance health equity, improve quality and help eliminate health care disparities. One specific standard, the number eight standard, calls for health care institutions to provide easy-to-understand print and multimedia materials for patients, families and the community.
