Rural Emergency Hospital (REH) is Medicare-provider designation given to eligible rural hospitals by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in response to rural hospital closures and to promote health equity for people living in rural communities by providing access to needed services. REHs are required to provide 24-hour emergency and observation services and can elect to furnish other outpatient services.
